More Work of Rankin ...

When I was looking at some more work of Rankin, I came across these images and I thought these would be something that you see coming from All Saints. Therefore I thought our team could use these images for some inspiration, when beginning our photoshoots.

John Rankin Waddell; Rankin

After becoming founder of Dazed & Confused, Rankin earned himslef a reputation for creative portaiture and a talent for capturing the character and spirit of his subjects. Below are a range of photography I have selected by Rankin.

Dazed & Confused

Dazed & Confused, isn't a magazine I get on a regular basis like Vogue & Vanity Fair which I both have on subscriptions, however to do buy it every know and again so I do know a little bit about the magazine. However I felt I still needed to do some more research into it.

Dazed & Confused is a London based Fashion & Culture magazine. It was founded by photographer Rankin and writer and cultural enthusiast Jefferson Hack. It started in 1992 with a limited-run-fold-out poster. With its fashion, photography and art content long established, they then brought it's music and film editorial up to the same rankings. Today, Dazed & Confused is still 100% independent and in spirit.

From looing at the previous covers of Dazed & Confused they are either very busy and colouful or plain and black and white, and the later approach I think will need to be taken into consideration for our brief.

Vogue; December 2009

You might be thinking, how is Vogue December 2009 issue relevant to my research, well this issue of Vogue All Saints photographically collaborated with them. In this issue of Vogue there was an insert of "Glamour in Vogue" and this was all in association of All Saints Spitafields.

All Saints is known for it's unique brand of sharp edge, directional clothing where as Vogue is known for its flawless models, dependable fashion news, trends and catwalk news, so this collaboration is defiantly an exciting one.

As you can see from this editorial, all the pictures are very dark, serious and have a real sense of confidence in every shot. Again black and white photography is used and works very well and the selected few colour images give it a little bit of an edge.

All Saints; Photography

I wanted to look into the Photography style that All Saints stick too, the locations they're in and the mood of the image too.

From looking at all these images black and white photography is popular for All Saints, which works well with their brand, and the mood of the photographs is always very seroius and alot of confidence is conveyed too.

All Saints; Style

This is some research into All Saints style.

From these images of All Saint's latest lookbook, you can see a trend of mainly darker colours, and neutrals. Military boots also seem to be very popular, aswell as knitted jumpers.

Fashion Photography * Editorials * Digitial Media Production

Following on from Project 4, Project 5 links in nicely. For this project we were put into teams; we are working for a creative agency. The agency has been commissioned by All Saints to produce a series of editorial photographs for a brand fashion editorial. The editorial will be published in Dazed & Confused magazine across 4 pages.

The brief that we have been given is:

"To produce a range of Fashion photographs for a brand editorial for our client that will be used as a four page editorial about the brand in a magazine. In addition of 100-300 word narrative for the editorial photographs."

Our client: All Saints
Our magazine: Dazed & Confused
Our main inspiration: Rankin

To give us a starting point for this brief, individual research into our client, our magazine and our main inspiration will be carried out first.

Andrea Klarin

For my Photographer research, I started looking at the work of Andrea Klarin. His love for photography started when she was 18, after studying for three years in Brussles, she then moved to Paris to shadow Fashion Photography. The unusual angles which Klarin uses drew my attention to his work. Klarin has shot many campaigns for the likes of Valentino, Lanvin and Guerlain, and Klarin's editorial work has appeared in the likes of Vogue, InStyle and Harpers Bazaar. Below is some of my favourite pieces of Klarin's work.
